What can preconception planning do for your egg quality?
Before you dive into trying to conceive, it’s important to take stock of your health and ask: Are your hormones harmonising like a well-conducted orchestra, or is there an underlying issue like PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, or thyroid conditions making a cameo?
If you’ve been experiencing menstrual symptoms that just don’t feel right, it’s time to dig deeper and address them before conception. And if you’re already on the baby-making journey and dealing with any of these conditions, don’t worry—naturopathy offers plenty of natural support to help you through your reproductive years.
If we allow time for actively working on preconception care we have a better chance to optimise egg quality, particularly by addressing nutrition, lifestyle, and any previous health conditions.
In doing so this helps create a healthier environment for egg development. High-quality eggs are crucial for fertility because they increase the chances of successful fertilisation and embryo development, ultimately supporting a healthy pregnancy and live birth.
The Acupuncture Pregnancy Clinic supports patients through IVF, natural conception, pregnancy, and women’s health using Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Our clinics are located in Westmead, Sydney CBD, Alexandria, Gosford, Melbourne, and Mornington.
We also offer nutrition and naturopathy consultations and osteopathy in Alexandria, with support for all life stages.
Top 10 tips to support this planning process
- Cut out fragrance
- Get 8-10 hours of quality sleep
- Quit smoking, minimise alcohol
- Eat enough calories, high nutrient dense foods
- Minimise everyday toxins (this tip is very broad…book in a consultation for more info)
- Get some comprehensive bloods done (including Vitamin D!)
- Consider supplementation of CoQ10, Myo-inositol, N-Acetyl-Cysteine
- Consider high zinc foods daily or need for supplementation
- Swap out groceries to be spray free, or use a fruit/veg wash before meal prep
- Incorporate weight bearing exercise
I could go on and on with limiting caffeine intake, staying ultra hydrated (maybe electrolyte supplementation), eating more omega-rich foods, eating more protein (always), managing stress whether it’s taking up yoga, meditation or working on ways to reduce stress in the workplace.
Let’s talk nutrition…
Why does nutrition matter for a healthy conception?
Nutrition plays a pivotal role in preparing your body for baby-making because it directly impacts the health of both the egg and sperm, setting the foundation for a healthy pregnancy. The first 1000 days of your child’s life are crucial for setting them up for a healthy and happy life, and we have studies to support this (epigenetics is a big factor). Epigenetics describes environmental factors that affect expression of genes in your baby’s body. We have the potential to modify which diseases can be avoided or switched on (through gene expression). This all starts 3-6 months BEFORE your child is even conceived.
A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants supports hormone regulation, improves fertility, and boosts the quality of eggs and sperm (approx 74 day life cycle for sperm). Nutrient-dense foods like leafy greens, healthy fats, and whole grains can help reduce inflammation, balance blood sugar, and promote optimal reproductive function. Plus, ensuring that your body is in top shape through nutrition helps prevent complications and supports early foetal development once conception occurs, giving your future baby the best start possible.
