FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Is acupuncture safe during IVF treatment?
Yes. Acupuncture is generally considered safe during IVF when provided by a registered Chinese Medicine practitioner with training in reproductive health and early pregnancy.
Many people in Westmead choose acupuncture alongside IVF because it may support their wellbeing, help regulate stress, and promote a sense of calm during what can be a demanding process. Research suggests acupuncture can influence nervous system activity, blood flow, and stress hormones.
When it comes to IVF outcomes, the evidence is mixed.
- Some meta-analyses and cohort studies report higher clinical pregnancy and live birth rates when acupuncture is used regularly across the cycle ( more than 3 sessions increases likelihood of clinical pregnancy rather than as a one-off around embryo transfer which has mixed results). while trials, especially those using only one or two treatments on transfer day, have found little or no difference in outcomes.
Because of this, acupuncture is best viewed as supportive care
At The Acupuncture Pregnancy Clinic Westmead, we work with patients attending Westmead Fertility Centre, IVFAustralia Westmead and other local clinics, and time treatments around stimulation, embryo transfer and the two-week wait where possible. We are conveniently located nearby and an easy walk to most of the local IVF clinics .
How many IVF acupuncture sessions do people usually have?
There is no single “correct” number, but both research and clinical experience suggest that dose and timing matter.
Some studies have grouped acupuncture by treatment “dose”:
- Fewer than 4 sessions i.e 3 acupuncture sessions or less (often just on transfer day)
- 4 sessions or more across the IVF cycle ( usually during stimulation phase or in follicular phase in lead up to embryo transfer and also around ET0
- Higher-dose protocols of around 9–12 sessions, delivered as part of a whole-systems Chinese Medicine approach
Findings include:
- Protocols with only 1–2 sessions around embryo transfer have shown limited or inconsistent impact on IVF outcomes.
- When patients receive at least 4 sessions, some studies report significantly higher clinical pregnancy rates.
- In one large cohort study, a whole-systems TCM approach (roughly 9–12 treatments, plus lifestyle and herbal support) was associated with higher live birth rates compared to IVF alone. These are observational findings and do not prove cause and effect, but they provide useful guidance on dose.
In real-world practice at our Westmead clinic, many IVF patients choose something like:
- 1–3 months before IVF: weekly acupuncture to support cycle regularity, blood flow, and general health (when time allows)
- During stimulation: 1–2 sessions per week
- Embryo transfer day: pre- and post-transfer treatment where possible
- Two-week wait: weekly sessions for stress, sleep and emotional support
- Early pregnancy: weekly if the cycle is successful
We can help you create a treatment plan that fits your IVF protocol at Westmead Fertility Centre or IVFAustralia Westmead, your work schedule, and your budget.
Can I have acupuncture in early pregnancy?
Yes. Many people continue acupuncture into the first trimester, whether they conceived naturally or through IVF.
In early pregnancy, acupuncture is often used to support:
- nausea and vomiting
- fatigue and sleep
- headaches and muscle tension
- feelings of stress or anxiety
Research suggests acupuncture and acupressure may help reduce nausea and dry retching in early pregnancy for some women. Other studies point to benefits for anxiety and general wellbeing, particularly around stressful moments like embryo transfer and the early two-week wait.
At The Acupuncture Pregnancy Clinic Westmead, we use gentle, pregnancy-appropriate techniques and avoid points that are not traditionally used in early pregnancy.
If you feel unsure about what is safe, your practitioner will walk you through options and tailor a plan to your symptoms and gestation.

Do you offer acupuncture on embryo transfer day near Westmead?
Yes. We provide embryo transfer-day acupuncture for people attending Westmead Fertility Centre, IVFAustralia Westmead and nearby clinics.
Research on transfer-day acupuncture shows:
- Early studies using only transfer-day treatments sometimes reported improved pregnancy rates, but later trials and meta-analyses have found mixed results.
- More recent work suggests that transfer-day acupuncture may be particularly helpful for certain subgroups, such as people with high stress levels, several previous unsuccessful IVF cycles, or those attending clinics with lower baseline success rates.
- Across studies, acupuncture around embryo transfer tends to reduce anxiety and improve emotional wellbeing, even when pregnancy outcomes do not change.
Because of this, we see transfer-day sessions as an important part of a larger IVF acupuncture plan, rather than a stand-alone treatment.
Where possible, we offer:
- a pre-transfer session to help calm the nervous system and support blood flow
- a post-transfer session to promote rest and relaxation
We also encourage patients to continue through the two-week wait, as many people find this the most emotionally intense part of the cycle.
If you know your transfer date, you can contact our Westmead clinic and we’ll help coordinate your appointments around theatre times and clinic schedules.
Located near Westmead Hospital and fertility specialists, our clinic supports IVF patients with acupuncture designed to promote circulation, reduce stress, and enhance your care plan.
With decades of experience supporting patients through stimulation, transfer and the two-week wait, our Westmead clinic offers calm, evidence-informed support for your IVF journey.
