A group of researchers in Shandong, China used electroacupuncture with PCOS patients during their IVF cycle. They found that there was a significant reduction in the incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) if acupuncture was included. Since women with PCOS are at risk of OHSS then this finding is of great interest. Many other aspects of the IVF cycle improved however the pregnancy rate was not significantly increased by the acupuncture. It is our finding and the opinion of other researchers in this field that long term treatment is needed to effect good change in PCOS patients.
Objective: To explore the effect of electroacupuncture intervention on in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer(IVF-ET) of patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS).Methods:96 PCOS patients who accepted IVF-ET were divided into observation group(50 cases) and control group(46 cases) randomly. Two groups were given long program of gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist(GnRHa),additionally, patients in observation group were treated by electroacupuncture, then therapeutic effects of two groups were compared.
Results: The fertilization rate and high-quality embryo rate in observation group(75.12%,63.53%) were significantly higher than those in control group(64.72%,50.11%),while the dosage of GnRHa in observation group((29.15±3.85) U) was lower than that in control group((36.21±5.37) U)(P0.05). The incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in observation group(10.00%) was lower than that in control group(18.60%), while the implantation rate and clinical pregnancy rate in observation group(18.60%,37.77%) were higher than those in control group(17.10%,31.70%),but there was no difference. There was no significant difference in duration of therapy, rate of oocytes per retrieval, cleavage rate and levels of estrogen, progestogen and luteinizing hormone on hCG day between two groups.
Conclusion: Electroacupuncture is effective in IVF-ET of patients with PCOS.
