Can Chinese Herbal Medicine Support Low AMH?

If you’ve been told your AMH is low, you might be wondering what options are available beyond standard medical treatment.

A recent study explored how a traditional Chinese herbal formula may support ovarian reserve in women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR).

AMH TEST

What did the study look at?

This retrospective cohort study included 122 women and compared three approaches:

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Chinese herbal medicine
  • A combination of both

The main outcome measured was change in AMH over a 3-month period.

What were the findings?

The study found that:

  • AMH improved in both herbal treatment groups
  • AMH declined in the HRT-only group
  • Herbal treatment alone showed similar results to combined therapy

These results suggest that the herbal formula may have played a key role in the observed changes.

Who responded best?

Stronger responses were seen in:

  • Women under 40
  • Those who had not previously given birth
  • Those with a baseline AMH above 0.2

In women with very low AMH, changes were less significant, which highlights how important timing and baseline health can be.

How might this work?

Researchers suggest several possible mechanisms, including:

  • Supporting blood flow to the ovaries
  • Reducing oxidative stress
  • Helping regulate hormonal pathways

Variety of Traditional Herbal Chinese Medicine

From a Chinese medicine perspective, treatment focuses on supporting kidney energy and improving circulation to the reproductive system.

What does this mean for you?

This was an observational study, so it does not prove cause and effect. More research, including larger clinical trials, is needed.

That said, it adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that Chinese medicine may offer supportive care for women with low ovarian reserve.
