How Heat Therapy Supports Reproductive Health

Heat therapy has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to promote circulation, warm the womb, and relax muscles and sinews. In TCM, a warm uterus is key to reproductive health, as cold stagnation can contribute to period pain, endometriosis symptoms, and fertility challenges. If you feel the cold easily, have a cool abdomen, or find yourself constantly reaching for a heat pack during your period, heat therapy might be just what you need.

From a biological perspective, heat promotes vasodilation—widening blood vessels to improve circulation, which increases oxygen and nutrient delivery to the uterus and ovaries. This can help nourish reproductive tissues, ease muscle tension, and support overall function. Heat therapy also influences prostaglandins—hormone-like compounds responsible for triggering uterine contractions. High prostaglandin levels can cause severe cramping, and warmth can help regulate their production, reducing pain intensity, discomfort and information about endometriosis in a Chinese medicine perspective Or Acupuncture for Pelvic Pain: Supporting Pelvic Health and Reproductive Wellbeing.

When and How to Use Heat Therapy When Trying to Conceive

Applying heat during menstruation can be particularly effective for relieving cramps and encouraging a smoother blood flow. In TCM, cold stagnation is considered a key factor in painful periods, and warmth can help counteract this by improving circulation and reducing uterine contractions. During the follicular phase (before ovulation), heat therapy may support fertility by enhancing circulation to the uterus and ovaries, creating a more nourishing environment for egg development. If you’re undergoing IVF, gentle heat after egg retrieval can ease cramping and discomfort by promoting muscle relaxation and improved blood flow.

The Science Behind Heat Therapy

Heat therapy works by increasing blood flow, relaxing muscles, reducing stress, and optimising the uterine environment. Improved circulation means more oxygen and nutrients for the ovaries and uterus, supporting egg health and implantation. When applied to the abdomen, heat helps relax the smooth muscles of the uterus, reducing the intensity of cramps. It also activates the nervous system to release endorphins…your body’s natural painkillers and modulates pain perception through the Gate Control Theory, where warmth helps “block” pain signals from reaching the brain.

When to Avoid Heat Therapy

While heat therapy can be incredibly beneficial, there are times when it should be used with caution. After ovulation or embryo transfer (during IVF), it’s best to avoid applying heat directly to the lower abdomen to prevent raising core body temperature. Instead, warmth can be focused on the lower back or feet to encourage circulation without overheating the pelvic area.

Best Practices for Using Heat Therapy

For best results, use a warm (not hot) heat pack on the lower abdomen for 15-20 minutes at a time, especially during menstruation and the follicular phase. If using an electric heating pad, keep it on a low setting to prevent excessive heat exposure. Natural heat sources like warm baths or moxa (used in acupuncture treatments) can also provide gentle support for reproductive health.

Our Favourite Heat Therapy Product

We love and stock Kosi Heat Packs, which are designed to wrap around the body for targeted warmth and comfort. These packs provide gentle, soothing relief, making them perfect for menstrual cramps, post-IVF recovery, and relaxation. Their ergonomic design ensures they stay in place, allowing you to go about your day while benefiting from continuous heat therapy.

Final Thoughts

Heat therapy is a simple yet powerful way to support your body throughout your fertility journey. Whether you’re managing period pain, going through IVF, or simply trying to optimise your reproductive health, using warmth at the right times can make a big difference. As always, consult your healthcare provider to ensure heat therapy aligns with your individual needs.

By understanding when and how to use heat safely, you can harness its benefits to reduce pain, promote comfort, relaxation,  and overall reproductive wellness.
